Katerina Salonikidi is known for photographs of buildings under construction, the chapter of their story that usually goes untold.
She grew up in Greece, trained and worked as an architect in Rotterdam, Tokyo and London, and has spent the last eleven years in Los Angeles at design-build firms. A lifelong maker, she has always cared about how things come together.
Her work brings a documentary eye to the jobsite: raw framing, formwork, steel going in, and the craftspeople shaping it all by hand, before the walls close up and the finishes go on. She follows custom homes from excavation to the last hand-built detail, alongside prefab homes in the factory, fabrication and cabinet shops, and fire rebuilds.
After fifteen years in architecture, prefab and construction, she photographs from the inside. She knows the rhythm of a jobsite, which moments matter and how quickly each stage passes. Crews are at ease with her around because she understands their work.
For builders, architects and homeowners, her photographs become a record of how a project was made, and of the hundreds of hands and decisions behind it.
